About this project
Elmren Voice is our commercial Mac project for turning documents you own or are authorized to use into audio and portable read-along files. It runs on Apple Silicon M1 or later with macOS 13 or later. The build uses a Tauri and React interface with a Python sidecar. The practical workflow is to import PDF, EPUB, DOCX, TXT or Markdown, review the extracted text, generate a short sample, and check it before processing a longer document. The app includes 64 built-in voices. Optional voice cloning runs locally and requires the speaker's permission. A useful design tradeoff is the output format: an M4B is convenient for listening, while a self-contained HTML player carries its playback audio and word timings together for highlighted reading. There is also karaoke-style MP4 export. Files save locally; sharing a file is a separate step. Test a short export on the receiving device first. HTML output is portable, while creating the audio still needs the Mac app. Initial model downloads and licensing require internet. Speech generation runs locally after setup. The current reading workflow is English; the interface supports 11 languages. Elmren Voice costs $39.99 once for one Mac. The 7-day trial includes 120 minutes of speech synthesis.
